Kym Marsden (Aldershot, England/Connaught) scored against of the stingiest defenses in the region, but the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team came up short in a 2-1 loss to Malcolm X on Wednesday afternoon at Kleine Field.

The Chargers (1-7-1 overall, 1-4-1 Region IV) trailed 1-0 at halftime and saw the Hawks (6-1-1, 6-1-1) extend their lead to 2-0 before Sandburg played much of the second half with nine men.

Mike Pavon (Galveston, Texas/Willis) was issued a red card for a foul in the box during the 63rd minute, and Randy Mboyo (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) was sent off in the 64th minute after getting a second yellow card.

Despite being shorthanded, the Chargers cut their deficit in half on Marsden’s unassisted goal in the 73rd minute but couldn’t get the equalizer. The goal was just the second conceded by Malcolm X in eight matches this season.

Saahil Kapoor (Guilford, England/Guilford County) made seven saves in net for Sandburg.

The Chargers host Morton at 4 p.m. Saturday in another Region IV contest.
